A multi-instrumentalist who first came to notice within the jazz scene in South London will appear soon in San Diego.
Yussef Dayes, a talented drummer, arrived on the scene as a member of United Vibrations, a band formed with his brothers Ahmad and Kareen, and their friend Wayne Francis II. The group mixed rock, jazz, and Afro-beat into a unique sound that won praise for the LP “The Myth of the Golden Ratio,” which they released in 2016. They also released “Black Focus” that same year, on which they collaborated with Kamaal Williams. “Black Focus” won them the “Best Breakthrough Act” title at the Jazz FM awards in 2017.
He released “Love Is the Message,” a solo single, in 2018, before he dropped “What Kinda Music,” which make it into the Top Five on the album charts in the UK in 2020. “What Kinda Music” was a collaboration with Tom Misch, released on Blue Note.
Yussef frequently collaborates with other artists, and has a connection with the fashion world. The late Virgil Abloh of Louis Vuitton personally selected Yussef to curate and provide a soundtrack for the Louis Vuitton dinner show, which took place at Paris Men’s Fashion Week. Abloh also invited Yussef to give a performance in Paris, at the Louis Vuitton Museum.
