The San Diego Symphony is planning a magical, musical new year, featuring the works of one of the greatest of all composers.
The symphony is presenting three works by Ludwig Van Beethoven: the “Leonore Overture No. 3, Op. 72B”; the “Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15”; and “Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major, Op. 60.” The guest artist for the piano concerto is legendary pianist Emanuel Ax.
The “Leonore” is one of four overtures to “Fidelio,” Beethoven's only opera. Difficulties with the score led the composer to revise the piece several times until settling on the final format. The third overture is one of his most popular compositions.
Beethoven, who went to Vienna in 1792, was a pianist as well as a composer, and became known for his skill at the keyboard. He was expected to write his own concertos, but Beethoven was intimidated by Mozart, and was concerned he would not come up to his standard. His Piano Concert No. 1 bears traces of Mozart's influence.
Emanuel Ax was born in Ukraine, and moved with his family to Warsaw, Poland, then to Canada, and finally to New York City. He has been playing the piano since he was six years of age, and is on the faculty of the Julliard School of Music.
