One of the most vibrant neighborhoods of San Diego is the setting for an upcoming festival.
Fiesta Old Town Mercado will bring people back to the Old Town streets where they will find stores full of the wares of skilled artisans, colorful gifts, and delicious foods.
San Diego’s Old Town is considered to be California’s birthplace, since it was here that the Spanish established their first permanent settlement in the state. In addition to shops and eclectic restaurants serving scrumptious cuisine, there are historical sites that celebrate Mexican culture. There are museums in Old Town that explore California’s long history, and the shopping district known as the Mercado will house more than 100 vendors with handcrafted products such as jewelry and leather pieces.
Old Town was the place that Father Junipero Serra came to set up the first in a series of 21 missions that spread throughout the state. In the 1820s, a Mexican community known as El Pueblo de San Diego was established near the area, and in 1846, the American flag flew in Old Town’s plaza for the first time.
Old Town State Historic Park was created in 1968 by the state’s Parks and Recreation Department to preserve the heritage of the city and its founding.
The Fiesta Old Town Mercado is free, and is scheduled for May 1 and 2, from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm both days. Flyer printing can be used to create informative handouts for attendees at events like this.
