Illumina, a leader in genome sequencing, is growing so rapidly it is expanding almost constantly, and opened a new addition recently. The so-called i3 campus comprises seven acres, and offers 316,000 square feet, and is considered to be an extension of Illumina’s headquarters, which are located in nearby University City. The three “i”s in the name stand for “inspired,” “innovative,” and “iconic.”
The new complex has three buildings fitted out specifically to meet the needs of the company. The spaces emphasize openness, with lots of outside windows, and open office spaces inside the buildings. There is a gym on site, as well as the “Salt + Air” restaurant. The buildings are also full of both large and small meeting rooms. The larger spaces, which can be reserved, are used when formal presentations are made; the small rooms, which may hold only one or two people, provide privacy for informal discussions among Illumina employees.
Jenny Durbin, the global facilities manager for Illumina, says employees set their own hours and make their own schedules, which led the company to create spaces for people to work who may not necessarily be employed at i3. Seven thousand people work at Illumina, 3,000 in San Diego.
