A San Diego bar that serves craft beers has begun serving vegan dishes, which may surprise some patrons who are used to stopping in for a burger with their beer.
Toronado, a bar in the North Park neighborhood specializing in craft beer, has switched its menu from burgers, steak and sausages to dishes that are made entirely with plant-based materials and meat substitutes. The change is due to the fact that Anthem Vegan is now supplying Toronado's menu items.
Anthem began as a pop-up shop, and was a vendor at a food market before it opened as a diner in 2018. However, the diner recently closed, leaving vegans wondering where to get the food they enjoy. Now the question has been answered, as Anthem occupies the space next to Toronado. While some people felt vegan dishes were not a good fit with bar food, it appears the transition has been a great success. Businesses that make changes like this can use graphic design to create a new menu that reflects the new items available.
Items on the menu include a sandwich known as a “black-and-blue”. Traditionally, this is a steak sandwich with blue cheese crumbles or dressing on top. Toronado's version is made with faux beef strips known as kame. Also available is a teriyaki chicken dish, again made with plant materials, hummus, and corn cakes.
