Recently, over 4,000 people came to Balboa Park to take part in ONE WALK, raising funds on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which is working to eliminate Type 1 diabetes.
The event was a 5K run/walk with the KFMB Stations acting as host; Carlo Cecchetto from News 8 was the emcee for the event.
The event raised approximately $700,000, which will go to fund both local and global research of the disease, both to improve treatments of those who are living with it, and ultimately, to find a cure.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is now 45 years old, and is devoted to raising funds for those who are doing research into type 1 diabetes (T1D), as well as backing those who are treating the disease. It concentrates on fundraising, and is not itself a research organization, though it is the leading organization raising money for this cause on the globe. It attributes its success to the fact that it is focused exclusively on raising money to end T1D worldwide.
T1D is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. The disease can be managed, but not prevented.
