Dogs life at local library

Children who love dogs can head to the library if they would like read to some furry friends this summer.

BARK, otherwise known as ‘Beach Animals Reading with Kids’, is a program that allows kids to read to certified therapy dogs. In a safe atmosphere, the program helps children feel empowered and encourages them to read. Volunteers make this experience possible for children.

Established in 2007, BARK was formed to promote literacy and help boost children’s reading confidence, since kids are more likely to want to read to dogs than their peers. The program has proven to increase children’s literacy skills and participation in class.

Those interested in helping the non-profit organization can give monetary donations. Individuals with well-mannered dogs can look at the evaluation requirements on the BARK dogs website. Items such as dog-themed stickers, picture Books, or stuffed animals are also welcomed.

The dog and kid-friendly program is part of a free summer reading club at Chatsworth Library that incorporates engaging activities with reading. Along with stories, the program features crafts, puppet shows, and amusing characters. The library is likely to have utilized poster printing to help promote the reading club.

It all takes place on July 23 from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. The Chatsworth Library is located at 21052 Devonshire Street, just a few miles away from Northridge.
