State park in Lancaster holds first day hikes

A First Day Hike will be held at Saddleback Butte State Park in Lancaster as part of the First Day Hikes initiative of the State Parks of America.

This is an opportunity for families and individuals to start the New Year connecting with the outdoors and rejuvenating themselves with a vigorous hike at a state park.

There will be three hikes at Saddleback, ranging from an easy half-mile walk to a more strenuous hike travelling up the butte, measuring five miles long. Print shops are often used to create maps of such hikes so that participants can follow the trails.

The hike to the top of Saddleback Butte will begin at 9:00 am on January 1 and will provide a breathtaking view of the Mojave Desert once at the top. This hike reaches an elevation of 1,000 feet and takes about three hours as a round trip.

The Loop Hike across the park will begin at 10:00 am and is an easy to moderate hike, with high desert views over the Antelope Valley. This hike is 3.3 miles long and takes just under two hours round trip.

The Down Nature Trail begins at 11:00 am and is an interpretive tour led by a ranger along the nature trail. Attendees will learn about the unique cultural and natural history of the area. This walk takes about an hour and is about one-half mile long.
