Plant in Lancaster to help with carbon emissions

The first green hydrogen ecosystem of a closed-loop nature is being launched by Iwatani.

Iwatani is a developer of hydrogen refueling stations in California and a major hydrogen industrial gas company in Japan; the city of Lan caster, and SG H2 Energy. The plant will be at the intersection of Avenue M and 6th Street East on a site spanning five acres that is zoned for heavy industry.

Featured in the plant will be the gasification technology used by SG H2. This system produces carbon negative hydrogen by using recycled water, biomass, and biogenic waste. The supply of wastepaper will be facilitated by the city. This plant will reduce the methane produced by its landfills and save the city between $50 and $75 per ton in costs for landfill and the spaces it uses.

The plant is expected to produce each day up to 11,000 kilograms of green hydrogen and 3.85 million kilograms per year when it is fully operational, operating 350 days per year. Each year it is expected that the facility will produce 42,000 tons of recycled waste and employ 35 people on a full-time basis, while under construction it will provide 600 jobs. Printing services are often used to inform the public of such projects and keep them up-to-date on their progress.

Groundbreaking is expected in the first quarter of next year and production to begin in 2023.
