The Explorer Academy will be offered next month by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. It will be open to teenagers and young adults, and will take place at the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station.
The academy will be in a boot camp style and last for 15 weeks. It is a mini version of the deputy academy of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. Attendees will learn about teamwork, multi-tasking, responsibility, and leadership skills, and will have hands-on experience with the basic duties of law enforcement.
There will be classes on basic criminal law, narcotics K-9, homicide, and basic report writing, as well as weekly physical training. Businesses specializing in brochure printing can help to distribute the specific materials needed by academies such as this one.
Those who apply need to have graduated from eighth grade, should be between the ages of 14 and 20, and need to have at least a C average.
Applications can be picked up in the lobby of the Lancaster Station on West Lancaster Boulevard. They will be accepted until Friday, February 10. Parent and recruit orientation day will be held on Saturday, February 11 at the Sheriff’s Station, and registration will be on Saturday, February 18. The Explorer Academy is expected to begin on Saturday, February 25 and will run for on consecutive Saturdays up until early June.
