The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) has awarded the city of Lancaster a grant of $61,250 to implement the Just SNAP it! Traffic Safety Education Program.
The funds from this grant will focus on educating new drivers and highlight the importance of sharing the road with bicyclists and pedestrians. In the city, statistics show that 23.2 percent of such accidents are caused by those drivers between 16 and 25 years old.
The funding will support a variety of activities that will include participation in SEE AND BE SEEN programming and events; education programs in the classroom that will establish safe driving habits; bicycle rodeos; building a culture and community of road safety; a social media campaign; workshops in the community; educational presentations at schools and in the community; and development of a community-based Steering Committee to guide the development of future programs.

The Steering Committee will have stakeholders from the community who will collaborate with staff from the city and include such stakeholders regarding traffic safety as the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as well as education stakeholders such as the Antelope Valley Union High School District and self-selection from young adult and high school community events.
The funding runs through September 2024.
