It was announced late last month that Lancaster has found, with its installation of an energy storage system, another tool in its quest to become America’s first net zero energy city.
An energy storage system has been installed by Lancaster in its Museum of Arts and History (MOAH). The system was connected by Green Charge Networks and is designed to save money by avoiding peak time electric prices.
The energy is stored during low-energy usage times and then used during peak times, when the rates are higher. In the past 10 years, peak rates have gone up by over 7% per year. For many businesses and institutions, about 50% of their electric bill can be attributed to demand charges for electric usage during peak times.
In addition to installing the energy storage system, Green Charge Networks also installed an electric vehicle (EV) charging station in MOAH’s parking lot. The new EV fast charger is able to charge a vehicle in 30 minutes to 80% capacity.
The energy storage system is just the latest in the City of Lancaster’s pursuit of green energy. All new homes built in Lancaster must be constructed to use solar-generated power, and the city has reduced the time needed to obtain permits for solar power projects.
