Emergency food program in Lancaster area relocates

South Antelope Valley Emergency Services (SAVES) in Palmdale will have a new facility as the purchase of a new building was approved by the City Council. Residents of Lancaster will benefit from this as the program provides referrals, food, other emergency services to eligible residents.

A metal building spanning 13,000 square feet will be purchased from AV Heritage Builders, Inc. The total cost will be just over $621,000, which includes the bid for the facility and a contingency of 15 percent.

Growing demand has placed increasing pressure on the SAVES facility on E Avenue Q-12. The non-profit organization now serves approximately 6,000 people each year, compared to about one-third that number a decade ago. As more than 900,000 pounds of donated goods move through the organization each year, SAVES has expanded into off-site storage space to accommodate inventory.

Flyer printing can be used to provide more details on such an organization and its need for a larger facility.

The original plan was to renovate the existing facility of 5,000 square feet. However, the walls, foundation, and roof structure of the building had many seismic deficiencies. Consequently, the city decided to construct a new building which will allow for the expansion of storage and donations of toys, household items, and clothing, and provide classes on healthy living

Bidding on construction is scheduled for next summer. Design work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
