Executives from transportation company Uber recently announced that they are looking to hire more drivers from South Los Angeles, which includes the city of Downey, the San Fernando Valley, and other such areas where the company feels there is a lack of drivers.
According to the general manager of Uber in the Southern California area, Christopher Ballard, the goal is to hire 12,000 drivers in the county of Los Angeles over the next year. The company will look at those communities where reliable transportation is needed most and there is the greatest economic opportunity. The result would be less wait time for people in areas where the number of drivers is fewer.
In order to promote these opportunities, in addition to working with Print companies in the area to Print Flyers that can be distributed advertising the need for drivers, Uber is working with several organizations. These include the Los Angeles National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Goodwill of Southern California, Chrysalis, and the Los Angeles Urban League.
To promote these jobs, Uber is highlighting the flexibility of the hours and their smartphone app that arranges rides and provides directions. The company ensures the safety of the passengers and the ability of drivers to determine the end of their day of driving.
There are currently 54,000 driver-partners working as independent contractors for the company.
