An upcoming event has been scheduled in Downey to raise funds for a local sports program.
Home Field Advantage (HFA) is a non-profit program that teaches sports leadership to college and high school students. This coaching curriculum and education then allows them to turn around and coach sports after school at the elementary level in schools in their neighborhoods.
Attendees are helping HFA give younger members in the Downey community an active lifestyle, as well as helping volunteers learn about coaching, contributing to the activation of local facilities that are currently underused. In addition, the funds raised are providing needed, professional, high-quality athletic equipment for HFA's after-school programs.
HFA has partnered with the Downey Foundation for Educational Opportunities (DFEO), to provide students in the Downey Unified School District, in grades one through five, with sports programs after school. The programs are offered in basketball and soccer, and consist of one director of coaching, and a minimum of two assistants, who are the volunteers from the HFA effort. The director and volunteers lead the practice sessions, which take place after school, once a week, for one hour. In addition to weekly practices, competitive games take place throughout the year.
The Home Field Advantage Sports: 2020 New Year's Fundraiser is scheduled for January 24, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, at Stay Gallery on Downey Avenue. Tickets are $25. Banner printing can be used to create appropriate decorations for events like this.
