Downey residents have two big events coming up that will help celebrate the holidays.
For the fourth year in a row, the Downey Chamber of Commerce presents its Elf Run 5K. The course of the race is flat and fast, and is mostly an out-and-back run through downtown Downey. The fastest finishers in the male and female divisions will be guests of the Chamber, and will ride in the Downey Christmas Parade later that day. Everyone is encouraged to cheer on their favorite runner.
The parade is the second major event of the day, and features not one, but five grand marshals. The five are Keep Downey Beautiful’s director, Carol Rowland; Carrie and George Redfox, who are educators as well as supporters of Downey’s Rose Float Association; retired council member David Gafin, who also is active as a volunteer with the local Chamber of Commerce; and civic leader Stacy Brabant, who volunteers with Downey’s Assistance League.
Michael Calvert, the Chamber’s executive director, said the individuals are being honored for their service to the community, which fits with this year’s theme, “A Christmas of Serving.”
The Elf Run 5K is scheduled for this Sunday, December 1, from 8:00 am until 10:00 am. The parade follows the run, and is scheduled to run from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. Banner printing can be used to create decorations for the routes of events like these.
