Downey residents have a chance to get together and enjoy a day helping others.
The Downey Federal Credit Union is sponsoring its 7th Annual Food Packing Event. The goal of the day is to pack 60,000 meals to fight hunger in the area. For its first six years, the "DFCU Cares Food Packing Event" was focused on Downey, but is now being expanded to help people in other area cities. During that time, 305,000 meals were packed.
Volunteers are needed to help pack meals, but there will also be music, food, and fun for those who lend a hand. The event begins at 5:00 pm, when officials from DFCU will hold their 63rd Annual Meeting, discussing recent accomplishments, and what is planned for the new year. Dinner will be served at 5:30 pm, and at 6:00 pm, volunteers will start packing meals.
Volunteers will need to follow the FDA guidelines for safe food handling. These include wearing hairnets, taking off all jewelry except medical bracelets and wedding bands, keeping food and drink at least five feet from the food packing area, placing personal items under the tables and leaving them untouched until the end of the event, sanitizing their hands, and withdrawing from the event if they are ill.
The annual meeting will be held in the Warren High School Library, and packing will be done in the gym. The date is April 3. Flyer printing can be used to create instructional handouts for events like this.
