For the fourth year, Downey is planning a run to honor a fallen police officer, according to a recent announcement.
Friends of the Downey Police K-9 Foundation is teaming up with the Downey Police Officers Association to organize the fourth annual 5K run/walk, which will be held in honor of Officer Ricky Galvez.
The event starts with on-site registration on the day of the race, from 6:00 am until 7:00 am, followed by the national anthem, which will be performed at 7:15 am. The run/walk itself will begin at 7:30 am. The event is scheduled to last until 9:00 am, when closing remarks are planned. After that, attendees will be able to shop with on-site vendors from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. The run begins at the Columbia Sports Complex.
Officer Galvez joined the Downey Police Department in 2010, and wanted to become a K-9 handler. Friends describe him as funny, compassionate, and dedicated.
The run is set for November 17. The fee is $30 until November 7, after that, including registration on the day of the race, the fee is $40. Participants can sign up by going to racewire.com and searching for “5K for 5KING.” Techniques such as banner printing are available to help create decorations to mark the course in events like this, and local printing companies will be able to assist.
