Bakersfield hikers are looking forward to the upcoming Last Chance Canyon Loop Hike coming early in February.
A moderate all-day hike in Red Rock Canyon State Park will be a desert stroll through rocky bluffs, sandy washes, mining ruins, and craggy hills. Hikers can enjoy the pink-cast over the canyon at this time of year.
The trek will take hikers north through a gorge, and the last Chance Canyon drainage up the El Paso Mountains. After lunch the exit will be a walk down a dry creek bed and scaling a dry waterfall. The hike will be about 11 miles with only about 900’ elevation grain. This will be what is called at lolly-pop hike and great for beginners.
Bakersfield hikers will meet at Starbucks at 420-A Weedpatch and Highway 58 at 6:45, leave at 7:00 am Saturday, February 5th, and carpool to Jawbone Canyon Store South of Red Rock Canyon arriving around 8:15 am. They will then drive 1 mile to Red Rock North on Highway 14, turn right at Randsburg Road, go 5 miles east to Last Chance Canyon Road, turn left and park at the mouth of the canyon.
Hikers are to wear appropriate clothing, bring two liters of water, lunch and snacks.
