What's Happening in Bakersfield, CA…

CHIiPs for KiDs collecting toys downtown

The California Highway Patrol’s yearly toy drive will be collecting contributions in downtown Bakersfield this week.

The annual CHiPs for KiDs Toy Drive in Bakersfield has been underway since November 17 and will host a collection site in the parking lot of The Bakersfield Californian.

A variety of fundraising activities have been held in support of the Bakersfield drive, which provides hospitalized and disadvantaged children in Kern County with gifts for the holidays. Now in its fifth year locally, the CHP has run the charity statewide for over 15 years.

The judicious use of a poster printing service makes any fundraiser more likely to be a success, and the number of children the charity is able to service has increased thanks to the generosity of the Bakersfield community and the charity’s well executed ad campaign.

The children who benefit from the donations are referred to the CHP charity by the Kern County Network of Children, which works with social service agencies to assist sick and disadvantaged children. In 2012, about 2,000 children received gifts. The following year, the number more than doubled with approximately 4,500 children receiving a toy.

The collection site located in The Bakersfield Californian parking area will open on December 3, and donations of new, unwrapped toys will be accepted from 5am to 6pm. Donations elsewhere will continue to be accepted for this year’s gift giveaway until December 17.
