Relay for Life, the major fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, will be returning to Bakersfield in May.
The event will not be a run or race, but a community-based walk around a track at the Kern County Fairgrounds to celebrate both local survivors and those currently living with cancer, and to raise funds for cancer research, family services, advocacy, and education.
Festivities will begin with a Survivor Social on Tuesday, May 2. Guests are invited to a dinner, raffles, and a walk on the red carpet at Kern County Fairgrounds’ Harvest Hall from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. RSVP required.
At sunset on Saturday, May 6, relay teams will light the luminaria Bags that line the track in memory of those who have passed on. A Luminaria Ceremony will be held at dusk.
The Relay for Life Walk will be on Sunday, May 7, and will begin with a kick-off celebration. At 8:30 am, survivors will gather at the stage area for the opening ceremony before beginning the opening lap at 9:00 am. Spectators are invited to line the track and cheer their survivors.
Relatives and friends occasionally get some banner printing done and are encouraged to bring noise makers, pom-poms, and anything else they can find to show their support.
Caregivers will join the survivors on the second lap. Spectators may cheer these people also.
