Bakersfield shows it cares

The 37th Annual Bakersfield Toy Run and Canned Food Drive will be held a little differently this month.

In the past, the traditional charity ride starts at Beach Park around 10:00 am and ends at the fairgrounds. Participation fee is $20 in cash or $20 worth of non-perishable food and unwrapped toys. After the ride, the fairgrounds come alive with vendors, food, music and door prizes.

This year, the event will be a drive-through and drop-off affair. For three days, the Bakersfield Haley-Davidson at Highway 99 and Merle Haggard Drive will be accepting donations of toys and food. Both today and tomorrow (December 11 and 12), drop-off will be available from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm, and on Sunday, December 13 it will open at 7:00 am and close at 7:00 pm. All donations of toys and food will go to our local Salvation Army.

Each donor will receive a chance to win one of three gift cards. One card will be in the amount of $500, and the other two will be $250 each. The Bakersfield Harley-Davidson will also give a 15% discount on all merchandise, excluding motorcycles.

Although the event will not be able to offer food this year, T-Shirts sporting this year’s colorful reindeer graphic design (with COVID mask and all) will be available for purchase.

The event organizers are hoping to return to the original ride in 2021.
