Three bear sightings caused confusion, fascination, three school closings and two school lock downs last month.
Calls about bears being seen near the southeast Bakersfield city limits started officials on their hunt at about 2:00 am on September 23. By mid-morning, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife had tranquilized two adult bears, one on Morning Drive and the other on Breckenridge Road. The third bear, a cub, was found and tranquilized later in the day.
These three bears bring the count of recent bear events up to eight, according to Officer Ray Pruitt, Kern County Sheriff spokesman. Wildlife officials say the increase of bear sightings this year is likely due to them seeking food or water during drought conditions. Bears during this time of year are storing up the reserves for their upcoming hibernation.

Three schools, Edison Middle School, Edison Preschool, and Orangewood Elementary canceled classes. It was to be picture day at Orangewood; pictures were rescheduled for October 22 according to an email sent out by Principal Duane Grumling. Although they did not cancel classes, at the urging of law enforcement Voohies Elementary and Pioneer Drive Elementary were put on lockdown from 8:00 am till around 9:45 am.
