There has been a big push lately to get Bakersfield bicycling. July has three events geared to furthering the sport for adults as well as children.
Bike Bakersfield has been presenting bike maintenance and rodeos at libraries throughout the Bakersfield area. There will be a maintenance day later in July at the Wilson Library. Here, children are taught safety skills and how to maintain and repair their bicycles. Children are invited to bring their bikes and take advantage of the bike tubes, pumps, and other biking equipment that will be available. Those children who do not have bikes or helmets need to contact Bike Bakersfield for help.
A couple of days later, kids can take part in the bike rodeo. This time participants will learn bike safety such as how to navigate traffic, avoid hazards, and look out for driveways in an on-bike course.
The Bakersfield Police Department will be holding a luncheon presentation about crime prevention, bike and pedestrian safety, and sharing the road. Bikes will get safety Checks and can be left with Bike Bakersfield valets.
Wilson Bike Maintenance Day will be July 18 from noon until 2:00 pm at the Wilson Library, 1901 Wilson Road. The Wilson Bike Rodeo will be July 20 from noon until 2:00 pm.
