For something to do after Christmas, Gilbert families will be heading to the Zoppe Circus.
This circus is an Italian family offering that has been around since 1842. The one-ring circus still operates in a 500-seat tent and the family running the event today is the sixth generation of circus performers.
The circus is reminiscent of the intimate old-world Italian tradition. The show has a storyline that is geared to tap into every emotion. The acts range from canine capers, to acrobatics, to equestrian showmanship.
Alberto Zoppe – also known as Nino the Clown – is an 82-year-old iconic performer who began his American performances back in the Cecil B. Demille epic ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’. Giovanni Zoppe, his son, revived the family business in America eight years ago and has been traveling around the U.S with his family putting on shows three or more times a week.
Circuses like this have had poster printing done for decades. Some, like the Ringling Bros circus Posters, have become collector pieces.
The Zoppe Circus will be held on the west lawn of Chandler Center for the Arts at 250 N. Arizona Avenue, Chandler. Shows will be held on December 26 through 30, and from January 2 through 6. There will be a special New Year’s Eve Under the Big Top December the 31. Most shows start at 7:00 pm.
