Musical combines nostalgia and education in new Prattville

Prattville’s Way Off Broadway Theatre is hosting a production of the children’s musical Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. at the Cultural Art Center this June.

Based on the Emmy Award-winning animated cartoon series from the 1970s, the stage production adaptation of Schoolhouse Rock retains many of the witty earworms the show was known for, all wrapped in a fast-moving stage package.

Featuring tunes such as “Lolly, Lolly, Lolly,” “Just a Bill,” “Interplanet Janet,” and “Conjunction Junction,” to name a few, the musical features actors ages 10-17 and represents the culmination of a three-week-long immersive children’s theatre camp.

The plot centers on a young schoolteacher named Tom. As an inexperienced educator, Tom struggles with coming up with a lesson plan that will keep the children’s attention.

One day, while Tom is watching TV, characters emerge from the screen, representing elements of his personality, belting out the memorable Schoolhouse Rock anthems and granting him the inspiration on how to foster a passion for learning among his students.

Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. is playing June 18 to 20 at 7:00 pm, with an extra matinee show on June 20 at 2:00 pm. The performances are happening at the Cultural Art Center at 203 W 4th St in Prattville.
