High school events to remain in Montgomery

The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has agreed to keep a number of high school events in Montgomery Alabama until 2017.

The announcement was made at the start of the month by Steve Savarese, the executive director of AHSAA and the Mayor of Montgomery, Todd Strange. During the announcement, it was confirmed that a number of state championship events, including baseball, softball, and tennis would take place in Montgomery for the coming five years.

According to Savarese, the AHSAA has made a commitment to the city. The agreement states that Montgomery will host some of the major events for the AHSAA which will take place throughout the year. Some of the events include July’s All Star Sports week, a volleyball tournament in October, and the state championships for softball, baseball, and tennis. The Lagoon Park in Montgomery will host the crowning ceremony for the tennis championships every year. There will also be a possibility for other major events to be staged in the city.

Although Montgomery will invest $170,000 a year to AHSAA, the events will bring around $8m to the city’s economy. Local printers will be just one of the businesses to benefit from the visitors to the city during the next five years, with increased flyer and banner printing requirements no doubt being necessary. According to Savarese, the warm welcome from Montgomery encouraged the AHSAA to make a commitment to the city. Montgomery has made significant improvements to Cramton Bowl, a new multiplex which will be used for the volleyball championships, and a new soccer complex.
