Christmas giving starts early in Montgomery

Mental Health America, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping those living with mental illness and to increasing education about mental health, will be playing its part again this year with its annual Operation Santa Claus.

Having kicked off this month, Operation Santa Claus was established by the nationwide organization in the mid-1950s. Each chapter seeks out donations from their own communities and uses those donations to help the lives of others in the same community. The gifts are traditionally basic hygiene items that are often difficult for people struggling with mental illness to purchase for themselves.

Monetary donations and hygiene products are collected and donated to adults throughout the area. The gift is not meant just to be seen as a simple present, but as a gesture of love and hope. The organization even had Santa himself on hand to announce the beginning of the program this year.

For Montgomery and the River Region, this is the 64th year of this charity drive. All residents are asked to contribute what they can to help this group of adults that desperately needs assistance and support. In addition to toiletries and money, donors could also consider donating pre-printed Christmas cards and Postcards with messages of love and support that could be included with the thoughtful gifts. For any questions, Mental Health America can be contacted on (334) 262-5500.
