West Dunbartonshire to See a Custom Olympic Torch Passing

Many Clydebank schools were amongst those in West Dunbartonshire to see a custom Olympic torch passing through the area in anticipation of the forthcoming Rio Games in Brazil.

Some very fortunate pupils were allowed to run with it as well. The pupils were taking from their own school and running to the next one to hand it over and around 400 pupils got to carry the custom built torch on the day.  The torch will be staying in the surrounding areas as visits to neighbouring schools are planned.

Pupils are being encouraged to also tie in the baton carrying with other projects that can have the Olympics as a theme and an inspiration to be both more active in their lifestyles as well as getting more involved in sport.

As a further way to use the Olympics to encourage healthy living, two Clydebank schools also had projects where they had to cover the distance from Clydebank to Rio – almost 5900 miles – by the pupils running.  The tally from all the runs completed over a period of time by all the pupils had to come to 5898 miles and this was achieved by both using runs during school time as well as some pupils running outwith the school day – a fantastic achievement.

Events such as these can be promoted by using local printers to produce leaflets and Brochures detailing what is on, when and how people can participate.
