West Dunbartonshire Council, which covers Alexandria, has spent nearly £7 million of sick leave last year. The figures have been revealed in a report to go to councillors at the end of the month, with the report going on to say that "attendance management continues to be strategic priority for the council".
During 2014/15, West Dunbartonshire Council lost 57,211 full time equivalent working days through staff absence, with the average number of days lost per employee at 12.81 days, slightly down from 13 days in 2013/14.
It looks like matters are improving again with a projected figure of 11.7 days absence per employee for this financial year.
A joint attendance working group was set up three years ago, with the trade union involvement, and has been developing initiatives to improve performance and develop a revised attendance management policy with supporting arrangements, such as carers’ leave, cancer support, tailored adjustments for disability. Whilst there has been some evidence of improvement in attendance across the council, increasing attendance at work continues to be an area of significant focus for the council. The report will be considered at West Dunbartonshire Council's full council meeting on April 27.
