Two Dumbarton residents achieve special milestones

Two Dumbarton residents have achieved special milestones in the last week – Pat Burns will complete his 60th marathon (running for Multiple Sclerosis) and Danny Rainey becomes the longest serving volunteers with the Army Cadet Force in Scotland.

Danny has reached the milestone of 50 years a volunteer and has seen his retirement extended several times past the usual 55 and says that he has many happy memories of his time with the ACF over the years, from driving a Chieftain Tank to visiting Germany to meeting many hundreds of fine people that otherwise he would not have seen. Being a volunteer requires a few evenings a week to be given up, but there is the knowledge that the kids, who can be aged from 12 up (and both sexes) are not on the streets but also learning some useful skills for the lives.

Pat, who has run more marathons than he has lived years, runs for MS as his wife is a sufferer. His running is not just in Scotland, or indeed Europe, but anywhere and everywhere there is a marathon. But he is also prepared to run further and has run for just short of 24 hours solid when he did the West Highland Way (which is 96 miles).

Organisations such as the ACF and MS can benefit from getting local printers to produce leaflets detailing what they can offer.
