New coin to feature Helensburgh pioneer Baird

The pioneering Scottish inventor and son of Helensburgh John Logie Baird is set to be one of the iconic figures whose achievements are marked with a commemorative coin.

Baird has gone down in history as the man who developed the very first functioning television system and he was born at West Argyle Street, Helensburgh. Now he will be one of three important figures to feature on the coins, with his image to be added to a 50 pence coin. The coins will be special collector’s items, but some will also be usable as money.

There will be several versions of the Logie Baird coin produced, including normal silver, gold, cupro-nickel, and silver piedfort ones. Each will be inscribed with the words ‘John Logie Baird Television Pioneer’, as well as his date of birth and death, and an image of radio waves coming from a television mast.

Baird used the bedroom at his home in Helensburgh to carry out the initial experiments that led to the development of his television system in 1926, with this property now having B-listed status. Towns sometimes use local shops that offer brochure printing to help stock their visitor centres with information Brochures about important figures.

These unique commemorative coins are scheduled to be issued in 2021, although an exact date for the launch of them has not yet been announced.
