Memorial planned for Helensburgh war hero

Plans to lay a stone paying tribute to a man from Helensburgh who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his service during World War One have moved forward.

Colonel George Findlay hailed from the town and was one of just four soldiers from the Argyll and Bute area to be awarded the Victoria Cross – the highest possible UK medal for gallantry – for their service during the war. The planned stone is part of a national project to mark all those who received the medal in World War One.

Findlay was given the medal for bravery during the Battle of Sambre, which took place in November 1918, in the very final days of the war. It is hoped that the stone can be in place for the 100-year anniversary of the battle.

The chosen location is on a wall at Drumfork House, on the east side of Helensburgh. According to the Advertiser, Roger Clarke, a community councillor, told those who attended a recent meeting of the HCC:

β€œThe wall has been built by the only recognised stonemason left in Helensburgh and with the full blessing of the owner of Drumfork House, who has gone out of his way to make sure it stands out.”
