Helensburgh youngsters volunteering during summer

A group of over 50 youngsters hailing from both Lomond and Helensburgh are set to devote much of their holiday time during the summer to helping others, as part of a new scheme.

The young people in question have signed up for a programme called GIVE, which is taking place all through this summer. It is the brainchild of the Youth Service team from the local council, who are delivering it in partnership with TSI Argyll and Bute.

Those taking part will have the choice of a wide range of voluntary activities to get involved in, including an operation to clean up Helensburgh’s Hermitage Park and training workshops to enable them to assist those living with dementia.

Gillian Simpson from the TSI told the Helensburgh Advertiser:

“Young people can often get a bad press but there are loads of fantastic teenagers out there who are keen to get involved in volunteering projects.”

She went on to add that the feedback provided by the parents of youngsters wanting to take part had been extremely positive, with most considering it to be an excellent idea. One of the initial projects for the scheme is set to be the foodbank drive, being held later this month.

Voluntary schemes such as this one frequently make use of places that can supply poster printing, thus helping them attract those who could be interested.
