Helensburgh Heritage Trust wants to put a plinth commemorating RAF Helensburgh at a spot in Kidston Park, and it has submitted the Plans to Argyll and Bute Council in the hopes of getting the green light. If it does, the plinth would be designed to fit with the style used for other commemorative plaques that have been put up along the Clyde Sea Lochs Trail.
According to the Loch Side Press, the application that the trust has submitted states that:
“A commemorative stone pillar for RAF Helensburgh already exists in Helensburgh’s Kidston Park; however it provides almost no information on the important work which RAF Helensburgh undertook during the Second World War.”
The application goes on to add that the new plinth would rectify this by containing details of that work. Brochure printing is sometimes used to ensure visitors to a town can get guides explaining the stories behind important statues and plaques.
RAF Helensburgh was the secret base for the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment throughout the war, and the existing pillar was added to the park four years ago in recognition of its role.
No date for a decision on the new plinth has yet been given.
