This supermarket provided John Logie Baird Primary School with packets of seeds, while the children had the task of building raised beds of their own to plant them in. The seeds were split equally between the classes taking part, with each then looking after their beds during the summer holiday.
When they returned to school during August, they had a sizeable crop that had ripened and was due to be harvested. The children were then given the opportunity to sell these crops, including shallots, celery, broad beans and marrows, in the supermarket.
More than £40 was generated through sales of these vegetables, with Allison Smith, the deputy head teacher at the school, telling the Helensburgh Advertiser that it had been a really useful way for the pupils to gain new knowledge and skills outside a classroom setting:
“We would like to thank Annette and all the staff at Waitrose as well as their customers for supporting us through this enterprise and we look forward to working with them this year.”
