A housing developer has submitted an application for planning permission to transform an area of land in Dumbarton where the former Allied Distillers were based. The site, in Castle Road, is being earmarked for 38 houses. Previously there was an application to build 42 houses on the site. According to the application the local authority is being asked to approve Plans for a mix of two storey terraced, semi-detached, and detached houses, together with 63 parking spaces- if the project gets the green light.
The proposals will go before the West Dunbartonshire Planning Committee members in due course. Local councillor George Black, who represents the Ward 3 area, is in favour of a redevelopment of the site, but feels that a percentage of the proposed scheme could be allocated to affordable housing to help alleviate the housing waiting list in the area. He said: "New homes are always a welcome addition but the problem we have in this area is extreme deprivation. There's no affordable housing and while I won't want to take away anyone's right to buy a home, what we need are homes that can be purchased at an affordable price for people in West Dunbartonshire. Back in the old days, when we had the former Dumbarton District Council, we had housing associations who were told to make sure a section of new homes were for social housing. And that's a caveat that we should be implement to house builders today. We should be saying 'Yes, we welcome you to the area but what we want is a percentage of homes that are affordable and can be used as social housing. Unfortunately, that policy seems to have withered on the vine."
