Dumbarton Castle has achieved record visitor numbers over the summer period with over 12,000 more people coming to the Rock than in the same period last year. This is partially due to the Rock of Ages event which brought in 3000 people over two days in July.
The Council is looking at Plans to extend the visitor experience to turn the Castle into a tourist destination such as the Edinburgh and Stirling Castles. With the proximity to Loch Lomond there is a lot of potential for this. Possible ideas include a waterfront path linking the town centre to the castle, exhibition space, floodlight being installed as well as exploring the potential for rock climbing too. In total over twenty ideas are up for consideration in these Plans.
Historic Environment Scotland have said that Dumbarton Castle is in the top 20 of paid-for visitor attractions in the country. Historic tourism is seen as a growth industry for Scotland, with many places have a history that can be bloody, interesting and centuries old, combined with stunning vistas too. Dumbarton Castle, combined with the town and Loch Lomond has enough variety to keep people of all ages and stages interested.
