A charity focused on environmental issues called Hubbub came up with the idea four years ago and it involves a fridge being set up in a chosen location for the storage of surplus food. This food can be donated either by individuals or by shops and supermarkets and people are able to take whatever they need from the available supplies. Already, over 100 of these community fridges exist across the country.
Now Helensburgh could be joining them, with a cleaner and support worker who lives in the town leading the way. Jody Hopper learned about the project last Christmas and felt it was an idea that would work in Helensburgh.
She used social media to find out if other people agreed and told the Helensburgh Advertiser that the response was very positive. Flyer printing is also sometimes a good way of promoting ideas like this. Jody went on to say:
“It’s still in the very early planning stages and will probably take around eight months before anything can be finalised. I’m just putting out some feelers to see if anyone is interested.”
If it goes ahead, the fridge in Helensburgh would be the eighth in Scotland.
