Clock Tower in Helensburgh could become coffee shop

The disused Clock Tower in Helensburgh may be set to become a coffee outlet, with the news that Plans for this project have been submitted to the local council.

The tower stands on the corner of East Clyde Street and Sinclair Street and has lain disused for four years. It was last occupied by Visit Scotland who used it as a tourist information centre, but now The Tower Digital Arts Centre has put forward Plans to transform it into a coffee outlet. This organisation has submitted a change of use planning application to Argyll and Bute Council.

The architect behind the idea is Honeyman, Jack and Robertson and in a statement added to support the application, it said that if the tower is not brought back into use it may have to be knocked down for safety reasons, as it is currently derelict.

When new facilities like coffee shops first open, the owners often look to local Print shops to meet flyer printing orders so that they can promote the shops on the streets.

The Tower Digital Arts Centre owns the Clock Tower and previously managed to transform an old Helensburgh church into the Scottish Submarine Museum, as well as an arts hub and community cinema.

A decision as to whether the Plans can go ahead is due by the end of August.
