The Global Print Markets event was run by Pira International, the world-wide thought-leader on Packaging, Print and paper industries. Whilst the event had a global focus, this advice applies to Print shops from Dunfermline to Dorset, as the UK Print industry faces the same tough economic challenges as the rest of the world.
Despite tough times in terms of the global economy, it wasn’t all bad news. Dr. Ronnie Davis is the chief economist and vice president of Printing Industries of America said Print would continue to be in demand despite pessimistic forecasts. He spoke at the event, saying:
“Become a diversified, specialist printer. By that I mean specialise but add ancillary added-value services around your specialisation. The key to survival is not to get bigger, but get better.”
Printing companies are being encouraged to develop and area of specialism and make that a key part of their unique offering to stand out in a crowded market place. For example, local printing companies could specialise in bespoke full colour printing jobs tailored to their client’s needs, or specialise in one area of Print such as banner printing.
Dr. Davis left printing companies at the two-day conference with a positive message, saying:
“There is a lot of opportunity left in the printing industry," Davis said. "We are in the middle of very, very difficult times in global economy, but I have optimistic views about the future.”
