Plans revealed for Edinburgh stadium revamp

The findings of a recent report showcased three different concepts for the redevelopment of Meadowbank Stadium in the Scottish capital.

The least expensive of the proposals, with a cost of around £35m, will see the existing stadium knocked down and replaced with a number of facilities, including two sports halls, a fitness studio and a gymnastics hall, as well as a new 400m athletics track.

Another option in the report, priced at around £41m, would also see extra ball-sport pitches installed – including an indoor football arena.

The most expensive option – which would cost around £85m – would see a velodrome and tennis hall constructed. However, officials are expected to rule this choice out.

Land near the stadium will be sold in a bid to fund the project; decisions regarding how the rest of the funds will be sourced are yet to be revealed.

Councils often use modern services such as digital printing, in Dunfermline and other towns and cities in Scotland, when informing the public about redevelopment projects in the pipeline.

According to the Edinburgh Evening News, Richard Lewis, the city’s culture and sport convener, said that while the Meadowbank site is “much-loved” and still widely used, it is almost 50 years old and its facilities – once state-of-the-art – are now no longer fit to serve their purpose.

Further, Lewis explained that the city is “keen” to take advantage of the community sport legacy that the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will likely leave behind – and to do this, new facilities are required.
