A petition that has been launched in Dunfermline, with the aim of having the oldest building in the town revived as an attraction for visitors, has secured thousands of signatures within days.
Abbot House is located close to Dunfermline Abbey and was one of the major attractions in the town before its closure last year. The Abbot House Heritage Trust was anxious to keep the former heritage centre open at the time, but was unable to find the necessary funds.
Since that time this facility has remained disused, but construction work has been ongoing on the Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries – which is costing £10 million to complete – next door to Abbot House.
Now Thomas Moffatt, the chief executive for Visit Dunfermline, has started up a petition to try and ensure the facility’s future is safeguarded and he told The Courier why he was keen to see it reopen:
“Abbot House was a vibrant attraction that was extremely popular with visitors and tourists alike. Visit Dunfermline is of the opinion that the sooner it reopens the better.”
Alongside those of local people, the Abbot House petition has succeeded in securing signatures from those in other parts of the world – including places as far afield as Oregon.
Visitor attractions in the town can always rely on the support of places supplying postcard printing, to ensure they are able to offer souvenirs.
