Dunfermline new business contest could help revitalise city centre

A Dunfermline events organisation has recently launched a competition similar to TV's "The Apprentice" with the aim of discovering prospective entrepreneurs in the area.

The contest, known as "Venture Street", has been set up by Dunfermline First as a way of bringing new life to the city centre.

The project will enable shortlisted entrants to try out their business ideas in the city centre during the Christmas trading period – a time of year which normally sees over 20,000 visitors shopping in Dunfermline. The winner of the contest will receive £85,000, which should prove useful when it comes to setting up a viable business.

The prize money will mean that the winner will be able to use services such as Stationery printing in Dunfermline in order to ensure that the newly launched business presents as professional an image as possible. Also included in the prize are one year's accommodation for the business, special banking and accountancy services, legal advice, and mentoring, all provided without charge.

Alan Mutter, the local businessman who came up with the idea for the Venture Street project, said that entrants must be over 16 and will have to pitch their ideas to a panel. Existing businesses can enter but must agree to move to Venture Street's city centre location during the Christmas trial period.
