Discussions are already
underway over the possibility of hosting some of the shows from this famous arts festival in the town next year, instead of the usual capital setting.
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival runs for a month each year and has become world renowned as a showcase for the best in cutting edge arts shows, but Dunfermline played a key role in the very first event.
One of the eight companies performing at this inaugural Fringe, back in 1947, put its show on in Dunfermline Abbey. The piece in question was ‘Everyman’, a morality play set in medieval times.
Now this situation could be repeated during next year’s festival, with the area services manager at Fife Council, Joe McGuinness, telling the Dunfermline Press that:
“We met with Andrew Burns, the City of Edinburgh council leader, who gave us some good contacts and we followed that up and met Fringe chief executive Kath Mainland.”
He added that she felt a link-up could be a good way to celebrate the anniversary.
