Dunfermline is Scotland's best-read town

Dunfermline has something to celebrate after being awarded the title of the best-read town in the whole of Scotland.

The revelation that the people of Dunfermline love Books so much is, of course, great news for local authors, publishers and printing companies.

Dunfermline was the very first place in Scotland to be given the use of a free library by Andrew Carnegie, and locals feel that he would be proud of the fact that his philanthropy had a real impact on the reading habits of the people of Dunfermline.

The title of best-read town in Scotland was given to Dunfermline by online book selling giant, Amazon. Amazon compiled lists of the areas that had bought the most Books, newspapers and magazines in the UK, and Dunfermline came top for Scotland. No other Scottish town made it into the UK top 20 in terms of being best-read, so this is a real accolade for Dunfermline.

While e-book downloads were also included in the criteria for compiling the best-read list, the figures showed that printed paper Books are still extremely popular. The fact that many Dunfermline residents borrow Books from local libraries also shows that there is still a demand for Print Books, whether these are hardback or paperback versions, or even illustrated children's Books that are produced using full colour printing.

Dunfermline ranked 18th in the overall UK list for the title of best-read. Amazon used data collected over the last 12 months to determine the towns in the UK that had purchased the most reading material.
