What's Happening in Dunfermline, Scotland…

Contractor chosen for Dunfermline city square

Work on the construction of a brand new city square in Dunfermline will now be able to get underway with the confirmation that a contractor has been selected for the project.

Newlay Civil Engineering Ltd is the company that has been chosen by Fife Council to deliver the project. It will involve transforming a site in the heart of Dunfermline, at a cost of £1.65 million. The site in question is mostly disused at the moment and has been for several decades. At one time, it was home to a branch of the Co-op, but that closed its doors for good 35 years ago.

Now it is set to become a new city square, which has been designed by Iglu Studio. The square will be made up of two zones, with the design ensuring that they are linked to each other.

One of the zones will contain a public green space that is intended for recreational use. The other will be a space for events, including live performances, community activities and farmers’ markets.

Open air venues like this often become tourist attractions and brochure printing by Dunfermline shops can help to promote them.

The funding for this square has come from a variety of sources. Among them are the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Place Based Investment Fund.

Work is due to last for around 15 months.
