The book is the work of author Patricia Dennison and details how urban development took place across Scotland during the last millennium. The title of the book is ‘The Evolution of Scotland’s Towns: Creation, Growth and Fragmentation’ and it covers all different Forms of city and town life – including that of Dunfermline.
Speaking to a journalist from the Dunfermline Press, she stated that it is this kind of history that most clearly defines the lives of ordinary men and women and that the efforts of professional archivists and archive resources were vital to uncovering it.
She went on to say that what most fascinated her about Dunfermline was where the early burgh lay within the town, with Nethertown being her favoured location for it, although this wasn’t the opinion of everyone, adding:
“One of the outstanding features of medieval Dunfermline was the influence of the Abbey and the fantastic medieval water power system. This system was the basis of many of the mills in Dunfermline until the 19th century.”
