A planning meeting specifically to discuss them was held recently, at which the council gave the go ahead. The project will involve the block’s North side undergoing demolition, with the exception of a couple of Main Street buildings that have listed status.
The Riverside’s South side, which includes the former Woolworths building, the YMCA and Marks and Spencer is also due to be partially demolished. This process will be carried out in five stages, but full details of the project have not yet been made available to the public.
What is known is that a number of restaurants, a walkway and accommodation for students is set to be included within the development. The latter has caused some controversy, but Hugh Hunter of Prestwick Council told the Ayr Advertiser that:
“I actually think student accommodation is a great idea, students and young people bring a real vibrancy to the area.”
The planning committee for the council confirmed that it had found the presentation by Patrick Dunne and David Bell, from Ayr Renaissance, very impressive.
