Following severe storms in 2011, Prestwick was left without a set of Christmas lights to put on display in the town centre. The local Business Association in the town has applied for funding but, due to cuts and regulations around funding, it is likely that the town will not qualify for help with this year’s festive light show, known as the ‘Lighting up’ project. Instead, donations from local businesses are being sought to help light up the town this Christmas.
The chairperson of the Business Association in the area, Graeme Johnstone, spoke about this, saying:
“We would be delighted to hear from any community organisation who feel they can benefit the Lighting Up project.”
Many towns take this approach, offering local businesses space on Posters or Banners that are then displayed on items that have been sponsored in the town, such as lampposts, flower beds and town fixtures like roundabouts. Many local authorities work directly with local printing companies to produce these materials using methods like poster printing.
